John Cordrey
(1765-1825)
Horse, Trap and Groom on a country road
Oil on canvas adhered to board
44 x 61 cm
Acc. No: 1753
Condition: This painting was covered with a layer of surface dirt and discoloured, yellow varnish. Extensive retouchings were visible in the sky area. These appeared both darker and thicker than the surrounding original paint layer. The canvas had been attached to a stretcher, indicated by the type of age crack patterns that were present. In a later restoration treatment the canvas has been pasted on to masonite board. The adhesive had not aged nor embrittled but was still quite strong. Prior to adhesion the tacking margins had been removed.
Treatment: The removal of surface dirt, yellowed varnish and discoloured retouchings were removed carefully following solvent and reagent tests and safety margin cleaning tests. A conservation brush varnish was applied and finally the small damages were retouched using restoration colours. This treatment was carried out in 2000.
